10 Simple Ideas to Celebrate the Earth Day

10 Simple Ideas to Celebrate the Earth Day

Every year on the 22nd of April, people all over the world come together and celebrate Earth Day to demonstrate their support for environmental protection.
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 when a United States senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Rallies took place across the country and, by the end of the year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe.

Ways to Celebrate the Earth Day

Earth day is a global event where people come together to participate in community events to show their support for a healthy, sustainable, and habitable future for our people and the planet. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there are restrictions on the public events in many places this year, but this is not going to stop us from celebrating Earth Day. Here is a guide with simple ideas by which you can show your support and help bring a change to the environment. Small individual actions can make a big difference when aggregated with the collective efforts being made around the world.

1. Plant trees in your garden

Planting trees in your garden is the most easiest and the cheapest thing that you can do on this Earth Day. Trees are the perfect symbol to show your support for the environment and are going to remain with you for years to come. They are also potentially the most effective tools we have for combating climate change and drawing down carbon from the atmosphere.

2. Save Water

Water is the most vital resource that we have on earth. 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water, but only 3% of that is freshwater, and of that 3% most of it is locked under the Earth’s surface, in ice, atmosphere, and soil. So the water available to the entire population is very less i.e. around 0.007 only.

So use water judiciously, and do not waste water. On this earth day, analyze the different ways by which you can cut down the water usage at your house and teach the younger ones the importance of water and why we should not waste it.

3. Gift yourself a bicycle

Earth day would be the best day to gift yourself a bicycle. Places that can be easily commuted using a bicycle, opt for the one instead of driving. Cycling will not only help you keep yourself healthy, but also reduce the carbon emissions released while driving.

4. Bird feeder

Making a bird feeder is a great opportunity to provide supplemental nutrition for your feathery neighbors and invite some natural action into your yard for many days to come. It’s also just a fun daily activity to track all of the birds that visit your feeder—channel your inner bird watcher.

5. Gift a plant to friends and family

If you are planning to visit your friends and family, why not gift a plant with terracotta pots to them. They not only look beautiful but also symbolize your support for the environment. To make it more exciting, you can paint the pots with custom messages too.

6. Donate

Due to the limitation of time and priorities, we ourselves cannot be part of the many community activities conducted by different NGOs to safeguard our environment. But why not show our support by donating on this Earth Day. Donating to organizations doing good work is easy and one of the MOST effective tools we can use. So check out the cause that you believe in and support those organizations by donating to them.

7. Check out your energy usage

This Earth day, calculate your carbon footprint, and look out for some alternatives using which you can reduce the energy usage. The most easiest one is to replace your regular bulbs with the energy savers ones. Changing them can save you a lot of time, money, and energy.

8. Replace the plastic bottles with the reusable ones

We all know that plastic is not only bad for health but also a major cause of plastic pollution on land and water. Replacing your plastic bottle with reusable ones, is a small individual step, but can make a huge difference. Join the global effort to eliminate single-use plastic and save our oceans by banning plastic water bottles from your house for Earth Day’s sake! There are a lot of options available in the market, like bottles made of steel, copper and glass which you can use daily.

9. Stop the paper mails and go paperless

Is your mailbox still full of mail from banks and companies? Well, Earth day will be the best day, to check which of these mail are junk and can be replaced with an email. So why wait, contact those sources and request them to opt for paperless communication. For others, reach out and unsubscribe in real life! It’s a tedious task, but well worth it for the environment and your sanity.

10. Adopt a zero-waste lifestyle

This earth day, why not take an initiative to lead a zero-waste lifestyle. Staying away from plastic bags and containers will not only eliminate plastic waste but also keep our bodies away from microplastics and toxins. Start making these small changes toward the zero-waste lifestyle with our guide, and you will be amazed at the results and help keep our planet clean too.

Whatever you decide to do this Earth Day, please join the celebration! There is so much work to be done, and that’s exactly why it’s so important to celebrate the wins we’ve already had, commemorate the day, and energize each other for the next steps we will all be taking together.
